Winter cleaning in Edmonton: salt, grit and the driest air in Canada

Every region's cleaning has a season, and Edmonton's is winter. From the first freeze to the spring melt, a home here fights three things it does not fight in July: road salt, grit and bone-dry air. Here is what each one does, and what actually works against it.

Salt

The white haze on hard floors by the door is dried road salt, carried in on boots and melted off in the entry. It is alkaline, it dulls finishes, and a plain water mop just moves it around. A damp mop with a splash of white vinegar in the water dissolves it; on sealed hardwood, keep the mop barely damp and dry the floor behind you.

On carpet and runners, salt crystals work into the pile and look like a stain that will not lift. Vacuum first, then blot with the same vinegar solution. Expect to do entries weekly from November to March — it is the one area our recurring clients ask us to hit hardest in winter.

Grit

Sand and gravel from the sidewalks are harder than your floor finish. Every step across an entry with grit on it is a fine sanding. The fix is mechanical, not chemical: a boot tray inside the door, a second mat two steps in, and shoes off. The mats themselves need shaking outside and vacuuming twice a week.

Dry air and static dust

Edmonton's furnace-heated winter air is among the driest in the country, and dry air makes dust cling with static — to screens, to dark furniture, to baseboards. A dry duster spreads it; a slightly damp microfibre cloth collects it. A humidifier run at 30–40% through the cold months cuts the static, helps the hardwood and, frankly, helps you too.

The furnace also runs nearly continuously, which means filters load faster and vents collect more. A filter change every two to three months in winter, and vent covers dusted on each clean, keeps the dust from recirculating.

Windows

Condensation on windows in January is normal; condensation that sits is mildew by March. Wipe the sills and the bottom of the glass on the coldest mornings, and keep blinds open a crack so air moves across the pane. Pets

Dogs bring in all three — salt on paws, grit in fur, and dander in dry air. A towel at the door and a paw rinse saves the floors; the pet add-on on our booking form gives the team the extra time fur needs on upholstery and floor edges.

The winter rhythm

This is the season where a bi-weekly schedule earns its keep. A home that gets a proper clean every two weeks from November to March does not need a spring "recovery" clean in April — it simply never fell behind.
